After two months……
“Chard, sumasakit na yung tiyan ko. Diba this week na yung due ko?” Asked Stephanie
“Sobrang sakit na ba? Should I bring you to the hospital na?” Si Richard.
“Pakiramdaman ko muna… sabihan kita pag di ko na kaya”
“Sabihin mo agad ha. Baka mapano kayo ni baby.”
“Oo naman. Kaya ko pa. Punta lang ako sa kwarto. Check ko yung bag para isang bitbit na lang pag pupunta na tayo hospital.”
“Okay”
Stephanie went upstairs. But when she reached their room, she felt a discharge from her vagina so she proceeded to the bathroom. She looked at her panty and there she saw blood. “Chard!!!!” She shouted, almost crying…
Richard heard her cry so he hurried to their room. “What happened??”
“Chard may dugo! Oh God! Please… ahhhhh!!! Arayyy!!! Chard dalin mo na ko sa ospital…!”
“Hang on Steph, I’ll ask for help…. Joma!!! Sabel!! Please give me a a hand here!” Richard shouted.
Dali daling dumating ang mga kasama sa bahay at mabilis na naibaba si Stephanie papunta sa kotse.
“Joma ikaw na magdrive aalalayan ko si Steph dito sa likod. Please hurry up pero be careful.” Instructed Richard. Then he looked at Stephanie. She’s now turning pale dahil derecho pa rin ang paglabas ng dugo. “Hang on Steph… hang on little buddy” habang hawak ang tiyan niya.
“Chard please…whatever happens.. save the baby. If you’ll have to choose between me and her (yeah the baby is a girl) please choose her.” Pleaded Stephanie
” Ssshhhh don’t speak like that. You’ll be fine. You’ll be okay.”
When they reached the hospital, they were assisted immediately by the nurses on duty. Her OB is already there. She was immediately transferred to the operating room. They decided that she will give birth via caesarian section. They cannot let the baby stay in there longer.
Once inside the operating room, before they give the epidural anesthesia, Stephanie talked to her OB “Dra., do I have a chance of surviving?”
Ito ang hindi alam ng mga taong nakapaligid sa kanya. Mukha siyang okay pero hindi. Nang minsang mag pa check up si Stephanie na mag isa, dahil may out of town seminar si Richard, inamin sa kanya ng OB niya hindi magiging simple ang panganganak niya. Maaari daw dumating sa point na kailangang mamili between her and the baby. Ito ay dahil sa mga complications kay Stephanie. Nang malaman ito ay nakiusap siya na huwag nang ipaalam sa iba. At sinabi niya rin sa OB ang istorya ng buhay niya. Kinuwento niya yung sa kanila nina Maya at Richard. Kaya naman kinumbinsi na rin niya ang OB na kung darating man sa point na kailangang mamili.. yung anak niya ang iligtas. Para man lang makabawi daw siya kina Maya at Richard. “Sigurado naman akong hindi nila pababayaan ang anak ko ” sabi ni Stephanie.
“Well Steph, in most cases kasi hindi naman yung patient ang pipirma ng waiver. It’s supposed to be your spouse in your case dahil married ka..”
“Doc, we don’t need to inform Richard about this. Wag niyo po ipaalam kahit kanino. Let’s keep this to ourselves. Kung gusto niyo, let’s just seek legal advise para naman hindi ka rin malagay sa alanganin pag nagkataon…I can call my attorney…”
“Well Steph… if that’s what you want…”
And so they signed an affidavit freeing Dra Gallego of any liability that may arise sa panganganak ni Stephanie.
“Steph, ang dami nang dugong nawala sayo. We cannot waste time. Gagawin ko lahat para mabuhay kayong dalawa ng baby mo.”
“It’s okay Dra. Save my baby. I will be forever grateful for that. Salamat.”
“Okay. It’s time for the anesthesia Steph.”
Then they gathered around her. The anesthesiologist, her OB, the pediatrician and the nurses that will assist them. She was given enough dose of Valium para mapakalma siya then next is the epidural anesthesia. And after a few minutes…wala na siyang maramdaman. Pasulpot sulpot na lang yung malay niya. May nararamdaman siya sa tiyan niya pero hindi masakit. Maya’t maya siya tinatawag ng Doctor para hindi siya tuluyang makatulog. Maya maya pa ay narinig na niya ang iyak ng kanyang anak. Dumilat siya at nang makita ang anak ay pumatak ang kanyang mga luha. “Thank God you’re safe baby… thanks Dra.”
Everybody in the operation room thought na nakaligtas na si Stephanie. But then she started shaking…kala nila nung una ay dahil pawala na yung effect ng anesthesia…. but then when her blood pressure went up and the monitor showing her heartbeat became unstable, they started to worry. “She’s having a heart attack!” Sigaw ni Dra Gallego.
They did everything they can to stabilize her breathing pero wala… then her heartbeat stopped.. they tried to revive her but she’s not responding.
She gave up.
She did not fight to live.
Stephanie chose to die.
